Life # 18 – Tainui from Alexandra Headland
This month, Cricks would like to help a teenager from the Sunshine Coast going through a tough time.
Tainui is an active 17 year old, who spent his weekends surfing or being involved in surf life saving. He was aiming to be one of the best in the Kellogg Nutrigrain Ironman series. A few months ago, he complained of sore limbs and was developing bruises and an unusual rash on his thighs. His doctor ordered blood tests.
Tainui was driving to training at Peregian Beach when he received an urgent phone call saying the results had come through - he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.
From that moment, their life has been turned upside down. Tainui was immediately rushed to the Lady Cilento Hospital in Brisbane for treatment. The week he was supposed to be starting Year 12 at Mountain Creek High, he was instead recovering from his first bout of chemotherapy. He has also been told he will have to remain on chemotherapy and testing for the next three years – a heavy burden for a boy who loves to surf and be active.
As well as being physically and emotionally draining for Tainui and his family, his illness has also taken a financial toll. His dad, Dave, has given up his offshore work to return home and support the family. And constant trips to Brisbane, accommodation and medical expenses are adding up.
The local community has rallied around and fundraised to take some of the pressure off, but this family is still very much in need of support. With your help, this is what we would like to do for them.
1. Car checks – The family need their car checked over and brakes tested. If any mechanics or dealerships can help with this, please let us know by clicking the link below.
2. Outdoor gear – Tainui loves surfing, camping, fishing .. anything outdoors. His family have managed to buy him a tinnie so he can still go out on the water when he is not having treatment. We would love to buy him some fishing gear for when he's well enough to go out, or something similar.
